From the President's Desk
The following is an excerpt from "From the President's
Desk", by Liz Murguia, President of the Humboldt Library
Foundation, printed in the Humboldt Library Foundation Newsletter,
Spring, 2004.
The Humboldt Library Foundation recently held a board retreat
to examine where we've been and what we hope to accomplish over
the next two years. In the seven years since our inception,
the Humboldt Library Foundation has created a vital organization
that provides broad support for the public library system.
We remain focused on our mission: to enhance the programs,
services and continuing development of the Humboldt County Public
Libraries.
For the next two years we have identified many opportunities
to assist the library, with our highest priority being the purchase
of new books and materials. We also plan to contribute
to the library's ongoing technology and equipment needs, develop
a business partner program, and sponsor educational and cultural
programs. We want to improve library advocacy and will
help with a speaker's bureau to tell the library's story throughout
the county.
Donors Increase HLF Family of Endowments
The Humboldt Library Foundation fund family has grown, with
the addition of three new funds in 1999. Vis and Sally Upatisringa
established the HunKwan Goh Memorial Book Fund, to honor
the memory of Dr. Upatisringa's father. The annual earnings of
this endowment will be used to purchase books and video tapes
about Thailand and China. An anonymous donor created the Preservation
Fund to help maintain the redwood exterior of the Main Library
in Eureka. The funds may be used as a match to encourage other
gifts for the general purpose of facilities maintenance. The
Knowledge Fund endowment was established by an HLF board
member and spouse to improve the nonfiction and scientific collections
of the library system through the purchase of books, computer
software and other materials.
The board gratefully acknowledges these generous gifts and
hopes others may be encouraged to add their contributions to
these worthy purposes. These new funds join the original Library
Foundation Fund, the Humboldt Library Foundation Endowment
and the Elizabeth Murguia-Sally Upatisringa Endowment
to support the libraries. The funds are managed for HLF
by the Humboldt Area Foundation.
Brochure available
The Planned Giving Committee has prepared an informational
brochure for use in planning long-term gifts or bequests to the
Library Foundation. These brochures are available at the County
